Originating from the reality competition show, Pop Idol, in UK, American Idol has become an instant hit since its debut in 2002, and, unlike most shows, has seen its viewership growing with the passing of every season. The show attempts to find the best singer in the country by nationwide auditions, with the public getting the chance to vote via phone in the latter stages of the competition. In addition to displaying some simply great talent, the show also gets its appeal from the diversity of the judges, from the often blunt and cruel Simon Cowell, to the sweet Paula Abdul, without forgetting the cool Randy Jackson.
3. The Apprentice
Billed as the “Ultimate Job Interview”, the show start sixteen to eighteen businesspeople competing in an elimination–style competition for a chance to run one of the companies of business magnate Donald Trump. They are divided into teams of 2, and the teams are given a task to perform every round, and the appointed leader of the losing team is confronted, asking reasons for their loss, and the leader is asked to nominate 2–4 people who may be responsible for the loss, and they confront each other, after which Donald Trump selects the person to be fired. The pure passion and fire shown by the contestants is what makes this show unbeatable, and Trump’s ruthlessness makes this show a must –watch.
4. Big Brother
This show, too, is quite good. Contestants (normally about 16) are made to live full-time with each other in a house (known as the Big Brother House), isolated from the outside world. Their main objective is to try to avoid being evicted through public voting. If being under constant observation isn’t a good enough attraction of the show, the basic living conditions, the weekly tasks set by the producers, and the Diary Room, where they convey their thoughts, feelings, and their eviction nominees makes this show further interesting.
5. Wife Swap
Based on a very novel concept, the show swaps wives/mothers between houses for two weeks. To make the show interesting, the producers make sure the wives are from extremely different lifestyles, which would mean that one would be a cluttered type, while the other would be an extremely neat one. However, the couples participating in a show don’t share a bed with the swapped wife.
